Important Updates on Recent Developments in Texas Mental Health Governance
I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has extended their prayers and support as my family and I navigate through recent challenges, including a serious security concern. Your support has made a significant difference, and I'm pleased to report substantial progress over the past two weeks.

Recent Victories at the January 31st TX LPC Board Meeting
Several significant achievements were realized during our last board meeting:
DEI Rule Reformation: We successfully revised the DEI rule to remove politically charged language while implementing meaningful accountability measures. The new rule ensures LPC professionals can serve their chosen population groups while preserving individual practice autonomy.
Fair Licensure Decisions: Two important cases were resolved positively:
A trauma survivor received clearance for licensure
A re-licensure case was approved with appropriate safeguards following what I personally viewed as unnecessarily stringent questioning by another Board member
Industry Independence: I presented crucial information about the vertical consolidation of the mental health industry, highlighting concerns about companies like Headway and Alma. This presentation emphasized the urgent need for Texas LPCs to unite in preserving our professional independence.
For those who couldn't attend, I encourage you to review the meeting recording here:
Security Incident Update
While I cannot disclose all details due to ongoing investigations, significant progress has been made regarding the death threat incident. I remain committed to ensuring full legal accountability for anyone involved in threatening harm against a public servant, whether they are associated with the Board, Agency, or Governor's Office.
Upcoming BHEC Council Meeting - February 18
An important matter requires attention at the upcoming BHEC Council Meeting. Dr. Taylor's actions make it clear he does not believe his position on the BHEC Council and potential conflicts of interest regarding alcohol-related investments are a big deal. Given the industry's intimate understanding of substance abuse impacts, I encourage concerned parties to:
Attend the upcoming meeting
Review relevant documentation
Make informed inquiries about these potential conflicts
Draw your own conclusions about the implications
Question Dr. Taylor and other Board and Agency Members about the conflict of interest during public comment
Call to Action
The strength of your professional community lies in your ability to unite and stand up for what is right. Your continued engagement and support are crucial as we work to maintain the integrity of your industry.
Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to these important causes.
Best regards,
Sean Shahkarami
